MARCH GLADNESS: Princeton University women’s basketball player Alex Wheatley goes up for a hook shot last week against Penn. Senior star Wheatley scored 20 points but it wasn’t enough as Princeton fell 62-60 to the Quakers in a winner-take-all showdown for the Ivy League title on March 8. The Tigers, who moved to 23-5 overall and 12-2 Ivy with the loss, were able to put that setback behind them last Monday evening when they received a bid to the NCAA tournament. Last March, a 30-0 Princeton University women’s basketball team seemed to get a raw deal when it was seeded eighth in the NCAA tournament and put on a collision course for a second round clash with top-seeded Maryland in its home arena. more

NET GAIN: Princeton University women’s hockey goalie Kimberley Newell makes a save in a game earlier this season. Last weekend, senior Newell starred as Princeton defeated Colgate 4-2 on Friday and then blanked Cornell 5-0 a day later. Newell had 37 saves against Colgate and 30 in the shutout of the Big Red. She was later named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week for her heroics. The win over Cornell clinched the Ivy League title for Princeton, the program’s first Ivy crown since 2006. Annie Tarakchian suffered through a rare off night when the Princeton University women’s basketball team lost at Seton Hall to see its 32-game regular season winning streak come to an end.

The senior star and tri-captain hit just 1-of-11 shots from the floor and had three points as the Tigers fell 71-64 to the Pirates in the November 19 contest.

As Princeton hit the court last week for its next game at Rider, Tarakchian was chomping at the bit to get back into action.

“It was frustrating last game, honestly I just wanted to get back out there and play another game because not having a game for a while after a rough one makes you think about it longer,” said Tarakchian, a 6’0 native of West Hills, Calif. more

MAKING A SPLASH: Princeton University men’s water polo goalie Vojislav Mitrovic guards the net in a game this season. Last Sunday, sophomore standout Mitrovic made 14 saves to help Princeton edge Johns Hopkins 7-6 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) championship game. Hosting a stingy Cornell team last Saturday that had yielded only six goals in its first 15 games, the Princeton University women’s soccer team didn’t want to get mired in a defensive battle with the Big Red.

Princeton junior star Tyler Lussi didn’t waste any time getting the Cornell defense on its heels, arching a shot into the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead 7:51 into the contest. more
