SPECIAL K: Princeton University softball player Kayla Bose heads to first base in recent action. Last Saturday, senior star and co-captain Bose got a pinch-hit walk-off single to give Princeton a 7-6 win over Penn in Game 1 in the first game of a pair of doubleheaders between the rivals. The Tigers went on to take three of four games over the weekend to solidify their hold on first place in the Ivy League’s South Division. Princeton is now 14-22 overall and 7-5 Ivy, holding a three-game lead over Columbia (11-26 overall, 4-8 Ivy) in the division with eight league games remaining. DRAMA KINGS: Princeton University baseball players celebrate after they edged Dartmouth 2-1 in the opening game of a doubleheader on a walk-off double by senior Billy Arendt last Saturday in its Ivy League opener. The Tigers won the nightcap 9-8 on a walk-off single by Joseph Flynn in the 10th inning, overcoming an 8-6 deficit. On Sunday, Princeton kept rolling, sweeping Harvard, 4-1 and 14-5, as junior outfielder Nick Hernandez had six RBIs on the day. Senior star Wheatley scored 20 points but it wasn’t enough as Princeton fell 62-60 to the Quakers in a winner-take-all showdown for the Ivy League title on March 8. The Tigers, who moved to 23-5 overall and 12-2 Ivy with the loss, were able to put that setback behind them last Monday evening when they received a bid to the NCAA tournament. Becoming the first Ivy team to ever be an at-large selection to March Madness, the Tigers were seeded 11th in the Sioux Falls, S.D. region and will face sixth-seeded West Virginia (24-9 overall, 12-6 Big 12) on March 18 at Columbus, Ohio in an opening round contest. Last Friday, senior forward Tarakchian scored a career-high 24 points and had 11 rebounds to help Princeton defeat Harvard 79-69 to start her final home weekend. A night later, she scored nine points and had 11 rebounds as the Tigers routed Dartmouth 68-42. The win improved Princeton to 23-4 overall and 12-1 Ivy League and set up a winner-take-all Ivy League title showdown with Penn (23-4 overall, 12-1 Ivy) slated for March 8 at Jadwin Gym. NET GAIN: Princeton University women’s hockey goalie Kimberley Newell makes a save in a game earlier this season. Last weekend, senior Newell starred as Princeton defeated Colgate 4-2 on Friday and then blanked Cornell 5-0 a day later. Newell had 37 saves against Colgate and 30 in the shutout of the Big Red. She was later named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week for her heroics. The win over Cornell clinched the Ivy League title for Princeton, the program’s first Ivy crown since 2006. Annie Tarakchian suffered through a rare off night when the Princeton University women’s basketball team lost at Seton Hall to see its 32-game regular season winning streak come to an end.

The senior star and tri-captain hit just 1-of-11 shots from the floor and had three points as the Tigers fell 71-64 to the Pirates in the November 19 contest.

As Princeton hit the court last week for its next game at Rider, Tarakchian was chomping at the bit to get back into action.

“It was frustrating last game, honestly I just wanted to get back out there and play another game because not having a game for a while after a rough one makes you think about it longer,” said Tarakchian, a 6’0 native of West Hills, Calif. more

“Being there as a freshman, the leadership we had on the team was unbelievable,” said Sura, reflecting on the tourney run which saw Tigers top West Virginia 2-1 in the first round before falling 3-1 to Marquette in the Round of 32. more

Hosting a stingy Cornell team last Saturday that had yielded only six goals in its first 15 games, the Princeton University women’s soccer team didn’t want to get mired in a defensive battle with the Big Red.

Princeton junior star Tyler Lussi didn’t waste any time getting the Cornell defense on its heels, arching a shot into the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead 7:51 into the contest. more
