Bishop of Lansing, Michigan, and Steedman of Chicago, Illinois, met in art school and have been friends making art together for 35 years. They both admire hand worked linens and beautifully patterned fabrics. As artists they have embellished, embroidered, and sewn their own things for years. As fans, they have collected many beautiful pieces from thrift stores and garage sales. They appreciate the countless hours that were devoted to each item.
Bishop and Steedman would like to honor the hands, hearts, and minds of those women. Although they do not know who they are, they are forever linked through their collaborations.
Bishop makes sewn and appliqued fabric collages from new and vintage fabric. Steedman paints on top of pieced together patterned fabric and vintage embroidered cloth.
Bishop and Steedman lived with Jessica Durrie, the co-owner of Small World Coffee, on and off during their college years in the ’80s and have been friends ever since. This art show is a testament to enduring friendships that nourish one another’s creativity.
