Town Talk

A forum for Princeton residents to express opinions about local and national issues

Question of the Week:

"How do issues related to campus security relate to you?" (Asked to PU students and parents at Whitman residential college)

"I don't really notice campus security a lot and the campus feels pretty safe to me. Last year I was able to unlock my door and leave it that way the whole year with no problems."

Veronica Pillar, Class of 2010, Great Falls, Va.

"The campus is pretty safe. The only thing that seems to happen is when someone breaks into one of the eating clubs and steals something. You will see the Public Safety cars going around campus all of the time making it really safe."

William Berkeley, Class of 2010, Pittsburgh

"With a school like Princeton in a small town like this we have no concerns regarding security. If we were in a major city with some issues there could be some concerns but here in Princeton things are pretty secure on their own."

John Mauraides, father of Daniel Mauraides, Class of 2011, San Mateo, Calif.

"I feel quite secure on campus. Just last night I was out hanging posters and I saw three Public Safety officers within the course of a half hour. The 'prox' system (magnetic ID cards that have to be swiped over a reader to get into buildings and dorms) makes sure that no strangers are getting into the dorms. All in all Princeton is a really safe town and I am not worried about safety at all."

Margaret Byron, Class of 2010, State College, Pa.

"I've always felt really safe at Princeton. They make it a priority with 'blue light' phones where you can connect directly to campus security from anywhere on campus. If you ever feel unsafe they will escort you to wherever you need to go."

Meredith Wren, Class of 2010, Chicago
