EAST AND WEST: ArcoStrum blends two cultures in its upcoming performance on July 6 at Richardson Auditorium, part of the Princeton University Summer Chamber Concerts series.

Princeton University Summer Chamber Concerts presents the ArcoStrum Experience on Monday, July 6, at 7:30 p.m. as part of its free annual summer concert series in Richardson Auditorium on the campus of Princeton University.

Strauss Shi and TY Zhang take audiences on a musical journey blending the traditional with the modern, merging Eastern and Western cultures. ArcoStrum combines the evocative sound of traditional Chinese instruments like the erhu (Chinese two-string fiddle) and dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) with the virtuosity of classical violin, guitar, and electric guitar/bass. With pieces by Vivaldi, Huang, Bill Withers, John Williams, and “Michael Jackson meets Scarlatti,” the program offers an immersive, movie-like experience that transcends boundaries and celebrates the evolution of music across cultures and generations.

Summer Chamber Concerts was founded in 1968 by music journalist, pianist, and cellist Barbara Sand. To this day, audience members recall sitting on the Graduate College lawn with blankets and picnic baskets for the concerts. Renovations at the Graduate College prompted a change of venue in 1991 to Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall.
