Theater and Music at West End Arts Festival

LIVE JAZZ: The Mauricio de Souza Jazz Quintet is among the attractions this season at New Jersey Repertory Company’s West End Arts Center in Long Branch. The jazz ensemble appears June 24 at 7 p.m.

“A Night at 1650 Broadway” is the opening attraction at West End Arts in Long Branch on Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. The evening, featuring Mikayla Cohen, celebrates the music of Carole King and the legacy of the Brill Building.

Located in New York City near the famous Brill Building, 1650 Broadway was the pivotal 1960s home of Aldon Music, where Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote hits like “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “The LocoMotion.” It served as a “hit factory” where songwriters worked in cramped cubicles to produce music for the era.

Next on June 17 at 7 p.m. is “Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway,” which includes moments from such musicals as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Jekyll and Hyde. Berg is the composer for How my Grandparents Fell in Love and The Sabbath Girl.

The Mauricio de Souza Jazz Quintet comes to West End on June 24 at 7 p.m. Born in Brasília, Brazil, Maurício de Souza is a jazz drummer who easily performs in both traditional jazz and Brazilian jazz styles.

West End Art Center is at 132 West End Avenue in Long Branch. Visit njrep.org for more information.
