The award-winning string trio Time for Three will return for their third Princeton Festival performance, under the tent at Morven Museum and Garden, on Thursday, June 18, at 7 p.m.
Known as TF3, the ensemble is made up of Ranaan Meyer (double bass and vocals), Nicolas Kendall (violin and vocals), and Charles Yang (violin and vocals). On their program are original works and covers. The classically trained, eclectic ensemble ranges in their repertoire from bluegrass to jazz, hip-hop, and classical. Referring to themselves as “a classically trained garage band,” they won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo.
The charter members of the group met while students at the Curtis Institute of Music. They initially discovered a mutual interest in bluegrass and country fiddling, and added jazz and improvisation to the mix.
According to information from the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, which presents the Princeton Festival, the trio performed “Blame” on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars for dancers Janel Parrish and Valentin Chmerkovskiy. They collaborated on the soundtrack for Robin Wright’s directorial debut film Land, which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
According to early lore, the original members of the trio were performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony as orchestra musicians when the house electrical system faltered. The trio came forth and performed spontaneously with one working light and a single microphone.
As a part of their education outreach, the trio produced an anti-bullying video which was released on YouTube; they sang the Kanye West/Daft Punk song “Stronger.”
