State Theatre New Jersey presents Meredith Willson’s The Music Man on Friday, May 8 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, May 9 at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, May 10 at 1 p.m.

There’s trouble in River City when a fast-talking salesman gets his heart stolen by the town librarian. The six-time, Tony Award-winning musical comedy follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band that he vows to organize — this, despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef.

His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. The family-friendly show features songs such as “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “Ya Got Trouble,” “‘Till There Was You,” “Pick-a-Little” and “Gary, Indiana.”

Matt Lenz directs the show, which has choreography by Joshua Bergasse. The production will showcase the Broadway costumes designed by Tony Award winner Santo Loquasto.

State Theatre New Jersey is at 15 Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick. Visit STNJ.org for tickets, which start at $52.
