To the Editor:
Last month, there was a knock on our front door — one of hundreds that Jon Durbin has made as part of his ambitious “1,000 Doors Pledge” during this Princeton primary election season. When we answered, we expected a quick introduction and a campaign flyer. Instead, we found ourselves in a thoughtful, half-hour conversation about Princeton, its challenges, its future, and the role everyday residents should play in shaping both.
That conversation stayed with us.
What began as a chance encounter quickly became personal. We discovered that Paul and Jon’s wife, Jean, had worked together in the Development Office at Princeton University years ago, a reminder that this community is built on real relationships and shared experiences. But more than that, Jon listened. He didn’t rush. He asked questions, considered our perspectives, and spoke with clarity about the responsibilities of local government.
Curious to learn more, we later attended one of his meet-and-greet events. There, we saw the same qualities on display: a genuine commitment to civic engagement, a deep understanding of the issues facing Princeton, and an ability to connect with people from all walks of life. It became clear to us that Jon isn’t just running a campaign; he’s building a conversation.
Professionally, Jon brings a strong and relevant skill set to the table. As a history editor at W.W. Norton, he has honed his ability to not only communicate clearly, but analyze complex issues, engage in strategic and fiscal planning, and appreciate the broader context behind today’s decisions. Just as importantly, he understands how governance should work for the people it serves.
But what ultimately convinced us was not just his résumé, but his character. Jon shows up. He listens. He engages. And in a time when local decisions carry increasing weight for our community’s future, those qualities matter.
We believe that if you take the time to speak with Jon as we did, you will come away with the impression that he is thoughtful, talented, and deeply committed to Princeton and all of its communities.
We strongly endorse Jon Durbin for Princeton Council and encourage our neighbors to vote for him in the Democratic Primary on June 2.
