On Thursday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m, in Richardson Auditorium, Princeton University Concerts (PUC) presents violist Tabea Zimmerman in a rare U.S. recital appearance, featuring the long-awaited debut of Spanish pianist Javier Perianes.
Zimmermann is often cited as the world’s greatest living violist, and her sold-out performances in past PUC seasons have been triumphs. The duo brings a retrospective program, spanning the lyricism of Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces and Brahms’ late second viola sonata, Britten’s melancholic tribute to Renaissance composer John Dowland in its seldom-performed original arrangement, and Shostakovich’s final composition, written weeks before the composer’s death.
In addition, Zimmerman will offer a master class for Princeton University students in Taplin Auditorium (Fine Hall) on Friday, March 20, at 4 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
Zimmermann is a soloist and chamber musician who performs worldwide, teaches, nurtures talent, and fosters collaboration. She is also president of several foundations and consistently initiates and commissions new works. She made her debut at 11 on the stage of the Berlin Philharmonie. She has held residencies with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, to name a few.
Perianes has performed internationally, working with such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Charles Dutoit, Zubin Mehta, Gustavo Dudamel, Klaus Mäkelä, Gianandrea Noseda, Gustavo Gimeno, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Simone Young, and Vladimir Jurowski. His concert with Zimmerman marks his debut at Princeton University Concerts.
“We are thrilled to welcome the phenomenal Tabea Zimmerman back to PUC, especially with the exciting debut of Javier Perianes,” said PUC Director Marna Seltzer. “This beautifully reflective program will explore the human experience that connects us, then lift us into the possibilities of what lies beyond.”
