EXCERPTS AND MORE: Members of Princeton University Sinfonia and the Princeton Opera Company perform opera excerpts in Richardson Auditorium on February 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Ruth Ochs leads the Princeton University Sinfonia in an evening of excerpts from operas by Mozart (Così fan tutte), Rossini, Donizetti, Sullivan, and Mascagni, featuring the Princeton Opera Company on Friday, February 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Richardson Auditorium.
“A Night at the Opera” includes Verdi’s “Overture” to Nabucco and the “Intermezzo” from Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. Members of the student-run Princeton Opera Company will be featured in ensembles that focus on love. The program includes two ensembles from Così fan tutte, where two men disguise themselves to test the faithfulness of their fiancées; and the pivotal duet “Chiedi al Rio” from Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, where Nemorino speaks alone with Adina, a woman above his station whom he hopes to woo. The program also includes a duet from Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience and the finale to the first act of Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella).
The program will feature pianist Charlie Ku ’26, an operations research and financial engineering major from Taiwan, performing the first movement of Beethoven’s “Emperor” Piano Concerto, #5. The Sinfonia Clarinet Ensemble (Jo-Ann Sternberg, director) will also perform the “Adagio” from Mozart’s Grand Partita arranged especially for this concert by Olin Zimmet ’26, a clarinetist in the orchestra.
The concert is open to the public. Tickets are $16 general admission/$6 students, available at tickets.princeton.edu. For more information call (609) 258-4241.
