Preserve the Magic: Restore Public Skating on Lake Carnegie

To the Editor:
During the recent cold spell in Princeton we learned that ice skating on Lake Carnegie had been banned — quite a disappointment to friends and families in Princeton who had hoped to take part in this very rare and fun experience. Apparently, the ban went quietly into effect some time before the last winter season, unbeknownst to many in the community (and to some members of the Princeton Council).

We certainly agree with the town administration’s concerns about safety, budget, and parking but believe there might be a way to satisfy all parties. We ask that the Princeton Council add this item to their agenda before next winter and invite key stakeholders (i.e., emergency personnel, town administration, Princeton University representative, members of the community) to explore solutions at a public meeting.

Skating on Lake Carnegie has historically been one of Princeton’s most celebrated and unique offerings, as well as an opportunity to build community. It is a chance for residents and families in Princeton to enjoy a rare occurrence of true magic and to create memories that last a lifetime. Please help us safely preserve this cherished activity.
