Peter Thomas Smith
April 3, 1942 – February 6, 2026

Peter T. Smith, 83, grew up in Plainville, CT, the first of five children. Peter’s childhood revolved around family, school, sports, and scouting (culminating in Eagle Scout). He had a large paper route and served as an altar boy. Peter attended Plainville High school where he wrote for the school paper and played for the basketball team. He attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism where he received the Deru award for academic excellence. During his sophomore year he met and fell in love with Jean Reinhart. They married in June of 1964, three days after graduation.

Peter’s career in international marketing took the young couple and their children, Lindsay and Davis, to Tokyo and Paris. The family returned to the U.S. in 1974 and settled in Marin County, CA. It was there that Jean recognized her calling to pursue seminary and eventual ordination as an Episcopal priest. By way of support, Peter took over many household tasks.

In 1980 the family relocated to Princeton, NJ. Peter worked for several divisions of Johnson and Johnson, as well as for Intercontinental and Scanticon Hotels. During the 1990s Peter and his friend Harry Clark formed Smith-Clark Associates, a Princeton based consulting firm. He concluded his career with a very satisfying role in the non-profit sector, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. Throughout his working years, Peter was proud to participate in various community activities, including with Trinity Church, Princeton. He was a member, and later President, of the board of the Princeton Blairstown Center. Peter and Jean retired to Brattleboro Vermont in 2007, and then relocated to Bloomfield, Connecticut, in 2023.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Reinhart Smith, daughter Lindsay Smith, son Davis Smith, son-in-law Sean Kirk, daughter-in-law Kendra Lawrence, granddaughters Jacqueline and Eliza Smith Kirk and Emma and Sydney Lawrence Smith. He is also survived by sisters Rachel DeAngelo, Eileen Litwin, Christine Saretsky, and Barbara Kaczinski. Peter loved his dogs and is survived by his sweet poodle, Hannah.
