To the Editor:
I would like to express my thanks and appreciation for the new bike lanes that have been constructed recently on various streets around town. Having a designated space makes me feel safe and — finally! — acknowledged as a legitimate road user (something the bike sharrows never managed to do).
I find it particularly exhilarating to ride the new bike lanes on Harrison Street, even if I can see that my driving neighbors need some time to get used to the standing posts. The bike boxes for turning left are an innovative addition to this pilot but sometimes I find it tricky to get to the left turn lane before the traffic lights change to green and cars start to move forward.
Overall I like all the bike lanes very much and I hope many more will be built soon, and that my neighbors will ride them often, and year-round, as I do (thanks for clearing the snow on the Harrison Street bike lanes!).
To any prospective bike riders: I can personally confirm research that shows riding a bike makes you happier. Even if it’s just to get some groceries a few blocks away.
