The Dryden Ensemble continues its season with a program entitled “Lachrimæ: In Praise of Tears,” featuring soprano Clara Rottsolk in songs by Dowland and Schubert. The concert will be held on Saturday, January 31 at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 50 Cherry Hill Road.
Admission is free, though donations will be accepted.
The year 2026 is the 400th anniversary of the death of Dowland, and January 31 is Franz Schubert’s 229th birthday. Rottsolk will be joined by Daniel Swenberg on lute and Romantic guitar, and Lisa Terry on bass viola and cello. Along with a curated selection of Dowland’s lute ayres, lute solos and ensembles will be drawn from Dowland’s famous collection, Lachrimæ, based in part on his most famous song “Flow my Tears.”
Rottsolk has appeared as a soloist with modern orchestras and period instrument ensembles. She is also dedicated to chamber and recital repertoire. A native of Seattle, she earned her music degrees at Rice University and Westminster Choir College, and taught voice and chamber music at Swarthmore College. Currently, she is assistant professor of the practice of music in voice at Duke University.
The final concert of Dryden’s season will take place on March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian church. This is a change from the original schedule. Entitled “The Most Faithful Companion: Lute and Guitar Trios of the 17th century,” it will feature Daniel Swenberg, Adam Cockerham, and Dušan Balarin on Renaissance and baroque lutes and baroque guitars with music by Piccinini, Cazzati, Purcell, Corbetta, Matteis, and Radolt.
