McCarter Theatre is offering a variety of accessible performances this season. They include ASL (American Sign Language) Interpreted, Open Captioned, and Relaxed performances.
One ASL interpreted show is scheduled for each Theater Series production. A team of certified ASL interpreters provide a sign language-interpreted show in addition to a pre-show overview of the play.
With audio described performances, audience members can listen through an ear piece as trained describers provide a live account of key visual elements in the play without interfering with the dialogue. One audio described performance is scheduled for each Theater Series production. Open captioned performances feature spoken dialogue scrolled across a digital screen as the action occurs. One is scheduled for each Theater Series performance.
Relaxed performances are live shows where typical “rules” of theater etiquette are relaxed, inviting all patrons to express themselves freely and enjoy a “shush-free” experience. They encourage individuals with autism, ADD, ADHD, dementia, and sensory sensitivities; parents with infants; and anyone else who would appreciate a socially compassionate space to attend a show.
Those shows are A Christmas Carol on Sunday, December 28 at 1 p.m.; and Laurie Berkner’s performance on Sunday, March 22 at 11 a.m.
McCarter Theatre is at 91 University Place.
