By late last night, Democrat Mikie Sherrill was the clear winner in the election for New Jersey governor. As of 9:33 p.m., according to the Associated Press, Sherrill had 57.2 percent of the vote, while Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli had 42.5 percent.
As of 11:45 p.m., according to information from Mercer County, voters in the county favored Sherrill by 70.76 percent, with 85,226 votes, over 28.56 percent for Ciattarelli, with 34,401 votes.
The New Jersey gubernatorial race was closely watched, as was that of Virginia, where Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears.
On the ballot for Princeton voters were unopposed candidates for two seats on Council and three seats on the Princeton Public Schools Board of Education (BOE).
According to results from Mercer County, Council President Mia Sacks received 7,775 votes, while Michelle Pirone Lambros got 7,707, securing their third terms. There were 252 write-in votes.
For the BOE candidates, Erica Snyder received 6,943 votes, Dafna Kendal got 6,456 votes, and Susan Kanter earned 6,392. There were 397 write-in votes. Snyder is new to the BOE, while Kendal is entering her fourth term and Kanter her third.
Incumbent Democrats Roy Freiman and Michelle Drulis won two seats in the General Assembly over Republican challengers Scott Sipos and Catherine Payne; Freiman winning with 41.30 percent of votes and Drulis 40.91 percent.
Incumbent County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello, a Democrat, won with 72.85 percent over Republican opponent Shaolin Brown, with 27.15 percent.
In the race for two seats on the Board of County Commissioners, incumbent Democrats Nina D. Melker and Cathleen L. Lewis won over Republican challengers Daniel J. Hanley Jr. and Alexander DiFalco. Melker had 35.55 percent to Hanley’s 14.78 percent, while Lewis had 34.88 percent over DiFalco’s 14.72 percent.
The unofficial totals so far do not include provisional ballots and some mail-in ballots.
