STEP LIVELY: McCarter Theatre is a stop on Step Afrika’s “Evolution Tour” on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m.
Step Afrika!, an authority on the art of stepping, comes to McCarter Theatre on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. with The Evolution Tour, fusing innovative step choreography with the sounds of a live DJ.
This performance blends percussive dance traditions from historically Black fraternities and sororities, traditional African dance, and contemporary movement, interwoven with storytelling, humor, and audience participation.
Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! has become one of the top 10 African American dance companies in the U.S. and a global ambassador for the art form, performing in more than 60 countries. The company also promotes stepping as an educational tool, fostering teamwork, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding, reaching tens of thousands of young people each year through tours of colleges and theaters nationwide.
Step Afrika! has earned multiple awards, and was the first dance group inducted into the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) Hall of Fame. The company has headlined President Barack Obama’s Black History Month Reception, performed at the first Juneteenth Celebration at the White House, and is featured in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture with the world’s first stepping interactive exhibit.
McCarter Theatre is located at 91 University Place. Visit mccarter.org for tickets.
