Sidewalk on Great Road Would Fix Problem That Has persisted for Years

To the Editor:

It’s life or death when you are trying to cross Great Road. The only lifeline is a sidewalk that abruptly ends a few blocks before my street. As a high schooler who cannot drive yet with grandparents who love to walk and a little sister who loves to bike, extending the Great Road sidewalk would be a simple fix for a problem that has persisted for years.

The construction for the sidewalk to reach Ridgeview Road and the surrounding neighborhoods of Heather Lane and Drakes Corner Road was stopped by one voice many years ago.

Now, the voice of the entire neighborhood is asking for the sidewalk once again. This extension would not only connect our currently isolated neighborhood to Princeton downtown and Community Park, but would also make it much safer for Princeton Academy students to reach their sister school, Stuart Country Day School. Some of these children are as young as kindergartners, and on a busy road such as Great Road with its blind turns and slopes, crossing the road is extremely dangerous.

With a sidewalk, the Great Road area would become much more accessible for bikers and walkers outside of the neighborhood too. Many of us in north Princeton are at the edge of town but we should not be forgotten. We would love to have access to our downtown, parks, and all that our incredible town has to offer. This extension can serve as a bridge between our communities, the very backbone of Princeton. Princeton is a very special place — it’s a place where ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things. So, to the town Council and my fellow townspeople, let’s get this sidewalk!
