Council Approves Solovay as Next Police Chief

By Anne Levin

At a meeting of Princeton Council on Tuesday, September 23, Captain Matthew Solovay was officially appointed as Princeton’s next police chief.

Solovay replaces current Chief Christopher Tash, who has been in the position since August 1, 2024. Tash will retire on September 30 following 28 years of service. Solovay’s appointment becomes effective on October 1.

Princeton’s fifth chief of police, Solovay has been a member of the Princeton Police Department since January 2005.  After serving in numerous positions including corporal, lieutenant, and head of the Operations Division and the Investigative Division, he was promoted to captain in September 2024.

Solovay holds degrees from Seton Hall University, the University of Virginia, and Fairleigh Dickinson University.

“I really appreciate the support,” Solovay said at the Council meeting where his appointment was approved. “I am incredibly humbled by this opportunity, and I am extremely excited to get to work.”
