Garden Theatre Hosts International Films

The Garden Theatre will present a new program of international films Friday-Sunday, October 10-12. The Garden is located at 160 Nassau Street.

Garden Goes Global is a weekend-long festival showcasing nine movies from around the world, spanning the silent era through the 21st century, and is sponsored in part by the Princeton Federal Credit Union. Tickets can be purchased individually, though there are a limited number of weekend-passports – a special package that allows access to each film throughout the festival.

Friday’s program begins at 7 p.m. with Jacques Tati’s expressionistic satire of mid-century France, Playtime. Screened at 10 p.m. is the action flick Kung Fu Hustle.

Saturday’s program begins at 10 a.m. with the family film Phantom Boy, a hand-drawn animated film from Belgium, presented in an English dub to accommodate the youngest travelers. Next at 12:25 p.m. is Vittoria de Sica’s Italian neorealist classic Bicycle Thieves. From Senegal, Ousmane Sembène’s Xala follows at 2:45 p.m. After a dinner break, fly around the globe to catch Akira Kurosawa’s masterful portrayal of post-war Japan, High and Low, at 7 p.m. End the day back on the continent at 10 p.m. with the radical feminist chamber piece of the Czech New Wave, Daisies.

Sunday: An overnight train will drop you in Germany at 1 p.m. for the 2010 full restoration of Fritz Lang’s silent sci-fi opus, Metropolis, accompanied by a live original score by renowned organist Brett Miller. Sail across the Atlantic to finish your globetrotting journey in Argentina at 6:30 p.m. with a rare screening of Never Open that Door, a stunning noir presented here in a new restoration.

Tickets and passports can be purchased at the box office or online at princetongardentheatre.org/global.
