Proposing “Senior” Taxis For Those Who Can’t Drive, or Walk to Local Bus Stops

To the Editor:

I was pleased to read your article about the proposed upgrades to local bus service that are being considered by the Princeton municipality [“Boosting Bus Service to Meet Public Needs; Improve Traffic, Parking,” page 1, September 3]. I have fond memories of taking the bus from Princeton to the Trenton Courthouse during weeks of jury duty some years ago, and your article spelled out some the many added resources now available.

At the same time, I am concerned for the hundreds of local seniors who cannot drive, or walk to a local bus stop. Some rides can be purchased through Crosstown, but these rides are only available weekdays until 5 p.m. They must be reserved more than a day before a ride, and rides are only one-way. No quick trips to the shopping center, no last-minute response to problems, no weekends, no evening help.

How about four or five local “senior” taxis, available with a phone call, subsidized in part by generous donors and the municipality? Something flexible like that would make a big difference to many of us!
