“Scenes From Home”: Works by Hopewell-based painter Ellie Wyeth are on view in the Solley Lobby at the Arts Council of Princeton through October 4.
“Scenes From Home,” an exhibition of new works by Hopewell-based painter Ellie Wyeth, is on view at the Arts Council of Princeton’s Solley Lobby through October 4. Admission is free.
Wyeth is best known in the region for her hand-painted custom floorcloths, which have been collected and admired for years. Painted on heavy canvas, sealed for durability, and designed to be both beautiful and practical, her floorcloths bring art directly into the home. Many feature whimsical motifs — vegetables, koi, or abstract patterns — that make them instantly recognizable. These pieces have been shown at national events by The American Craft Council and Paradise City Arts Festival, and remain one of her signature offerings.
In “Scenes From Home,” Wyeth shifts her focus to paintings that explore the comfort and symbolism of everyday domestic spaces. Chairs, windowsills, orchids, and beloved pets all become subjects. Through rich color, subtle symbolism, and a touch of surrealism, she transforms familiar household scenes into images that feel both personal and universal.
Wyeth’s background is as diverse as her subject matter. She began her career as an illustrator, with work appearing in The New Yorker and for Rutgers University Press. Later, time spent in Italy deepened her love of painting, and her return to New Jersey led her to expand into functional art with floorcloths, placemats, and runners. This blend of fine art and practical design has defined her creative path.
“Scenes From Home” is a natural next step in her artistic journey, combining her illustrative eye, painter’s palette, and deep affection for the meaning of “home.”
