Change of District for the Princetons Means Different Candidates for State Offices

In addition to the question of consolidation, the Borough mayoral race, and the races for Township Committee and Borough Council seats, Princeton voters should be aware of a district change that occurred last spring. The change, which places Princeton and South Brunswick in the 16th District, will impact candidates for the State legislature.

Candidates in the 16th District include incumbent Republican Christopher Bateman of Somerville and Democratic challenger Maurreen Vella of Hillsborough for one Senate seat; and incumbent Republican Peter J. Biondi and Jack Ciattarelli, both from Hillsborough, facing off with Democrats Marie Corfield of Flemington and Joe Camarota of Kendall Park for two Assembly seats.

Every ten years, following the release of new population data from the U.S. Census, the state must redraw the boundaries of the districts to keep their populations approximately equal. As a result, the Township and Borough were relocated from the 15th district to the newly configured 16th district. In addition to the two Princetons and South Brunswick, the district also includes Hillsborough, Branchburg, Manville, Millstone, Montgomery, Rocky Hill, and Somerville in Somerset County; and Delaware, Flemington, Raritan, Readington, and Stockton in Hunterdon County.

The six candidates recently participated in a League of Women Voters-sponsored public forum that was videotaped and archived at www.lwvprinceton.org.
