Town Talk

A forum for Princeton residents to express opinions about local and national issues

Question of the Week:

“What did you learn about sustainability from this tour?”
(Asked during the Princeton Environmental Commission’s Green Building and Garden Tour.)

“Princeton is a very forward thinking town; we’re here to learn about how you take an old home (55 Wiggins Street) and update it so it is energy efficient, and well insulated, with green and safe materials for the homeowners.”

Tom Weiss and Jessica Flint, Princeton

“What is good for the environment, is good for business, and is good for the community.”

Karen Jacobs, Langhorne, Pa.

“I learned about rain gardens today. When the rain comes down and it hits the cement, it takes nature with it to the sewer drain. But the rain garden is built like a wedge and the rain water goes into the garden. The garden has plants that like water a lot and the plants grow and grow.”

Eli Wasserman, Princeton

Maryanne: “I had looked into solar panels and they were expensive. I’m now going to look into a green roof.”

Karen: “We learned that depending on the treatment of the rooftop, you can save a lot of energy in both heating and cooling with a green roof. There is an initial up front cost but you save in the long term and the green roof shows sensitivity to the environment.”

Maryanne Knutson, Hamilton Twp. and Karen Bennett, Jacksonville

“I have an older house and am interested in how contractors would renovate older houses to update them for energy efficiency. I was interested to see how the windows were updated in the house on Madison Street. They had taken out the windows completely, put in weather stripping, and sealed the windows from the elements.”

Michael Jones Correa, Princeton
