Peter Benchley, the blockbuster novelist who turned his success into a lifelong advocacy of environmental and oceanic causes, died Sunday at his Boudinot Street home in Princeton Borough. He was 65.

The cause was pulmonary fibrosis, a degenerative lung tissue disease.
