Borough Patrolman Accused of Serving Alcohol to Minors

Dilshanie Perera

Subject to an administrative hearing, Borough Policeman Garrett Brown is accused of serving alcohol to minors at a party in Keene, New York in October 2007. The hearing commenced last Wednesday, and is scheduled to continue on April 16 at 9 a.m. in Borough Hall.

Borough Police Chief Anthony Frederico said that the case first came to their attention in December of 2007, but that they couldn’t proceed with an administrative hearing until the criminal case against Patrolman Brown was finished. Though he was charged under a New York state statute, the charges against him were dropped in October of 2008.

Mr. Brown allegedly attended a party where six teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 were present, and consumed alcohol with them. Mr. Brown and two other adults were present at the party, which was eventually broken up by New York state police.

Marsha Gates, who hosted the party, testified at the hearing, in which attorney Arthur Thibault represented the police department, and attorney James Mets defended Mr. Brown.

While Mr. Brown is on currently on restricted duty, it is possible he may be suspended or fired at the termination of the case.
